Kindergarten: What's the point?

As a parent, you have to decide on when to begin your child's education, and you may be asking, "What's the point of kindergarten?" Once you ask this question, many following questions arise. Is the point of kindergarten to get your children used to formal education? Is the point of kindergarten to teach your children to read? Is it to give them rigorous academic discipline? We want to help you answer these questions and more!

At St. John's Lutheran School we believe that kindergarten is integral to your child's social development. We put into action the musings of Robert Fulghum, who wrote "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten." It's in our kindergarten that your children will learn basic social skills and develop their Christian character. It's proven that when a kindergarten is based on an individual child's development over and above rigorous academics that they will be more successful in their academics in their later education.

What Does an Ideal Kindergarten Look Like?

  1. It gives individualized attention to each child and their needs
  2. It teaches conflict-resolution and problem-solving skills
  3. It fosters character development through a Christian environment
  4. It uses hands-on activities to develop skills and knowledge in each subject
  5. It addresses different types of learning needs for strong reading development
  6. It stresses social interaction and character over rigorous academics
  7. It makes learning fun and developmentally appropriate
  8. It recognizes its students by showcasing their work
  9. It provides ample time for play, group time, and focused attention to all tasks
  10. It is a safe, nurturing, loving and caring environment, where children and parents can look forward to school
